EDM is such a unique genre. Seriously, it’s so impactful it can turn up everything from packed out nightclubs to sprawling stadiums, bringing punters everywhere together through the love of dance and euphoria. It’s not uncommon to leave an EDM or DJ event having made several friends that you just know you’re gonna see at the next event. It’s one of the only forms of music that doesn’t need words to bring people together. All you need is a gorgeous bassline, some well placed hats, a consistent kick and a bloody satisfying snare, and boom, you can unite by the thousands.
It’s been a while since we’ve gotten to enjoy those special moments with each other, making friendships forged in the fire of dance. But, with restrictions beginning to ease and life slowly returning to normal, we’re optimistic that we’ll soon be back enjoying EDM events and DJ sets in all their wonder and magic. Regardless, this time away from those gorgeous dance floors have had us getting a bit reflective, forcing us to meditate on the many facets of the genre.
It’s been a journey to say the least, and we’ve been kept jiving, shaking and shufflin’ as a result. Fingers crossed we’ll get the opportunity to do all of the above in real life, real soon.
If you dug our Ten Boiler Rooms That Are Keeping Us Dancing In Lockdown, you’re for sure gonna love this beauty. We decided to explore the wide array of DJ sets Mixmag has to offer this time around, and we’ve definitely come up with some goodies. Really, we’ve got a little bit of everything for you today; Drum and bass, tech house, bassline, disco, the list goes on. It’s totally expansive, and filled with good vibes.
Check it below.
Aussie hero Anna Lunoe and French sensation Born Dirty are both superstars in their own right, each turning heads everywhere they go with their high octane DJ sets. Thus, you can imagine together they’re straight up phenomenal. Their Mixmag set sees them take to The Lab LA to celebrate their track together ‘Badass’. Featuring hits from both megastars, the set is the embodiment of everything wonderful about EDM, paying tribute to the past and present with their mix of samba, bailey funk and UK garage. The set is almost an entity on it’s own, spewing beautiful, uplifting vibes that are so pure it’s impossible not to get lost in. We also gotta say a very special birthday to the goddess herself Anna!
Norwich-born Chris Lake is a proper pioneer in the the EDM space, his unique brand of tech and bass house helping to set the tone of the house genre in the 2010s. His influence is so wide-spanning you can hear it in almost all corners of the tech house spectrum, being a testament to his undeniable talent. He’s an absolute monster live as well, with his vast array of hits like ‘Turn off the Lights’, ‘Free Your Body’ and ‘Deceiver’ on full display as he seamlessly crafts high octane build ups and drops that uplift all who are lucky enough to be present. His Mixmag set in The Lab LA is the perfect embodiment of all of the above, coming through with a solid hour of bliss with total ease.
Yes, yes, I know we already included Honey in our Ten Boiler Rooms That Are Keeping Us Dancing In Lockdown, but her Mixmag set is just too dope not to mention. Taking to the Lab Miami, the Chicago-born queen of the decks throws down a solid hour of body-freeing house, overflowing with enough soul to make the founders of house, jazz, R&B (essentially every soulful genre) proud. And yes, she drops that banging remix of Chaka Khan’s ‘Aint Nobody’ at around the 12 minute mark, which is absolutely impossible not to be entranced by.
Drum and bass is such an incredible, but underrated genre. It’s hard-hitting, gritty and bloody addictive. And with artists like SUB FOCUS leading the way, there’s no doubt it’ll continue to grow and churn out archaic bangers that equally match the fire within. His Mixmag set sees the Surrey-born DJ take to The Lab London to throw down in truly bodacious style, forcing gorgeous stank faces upon all who listen (let’s hope we’re just as lucky come October when he’s scheduled to play Touch Bass).
Sydney groove-masters Flight Facilities are responsible for some of the most uplifting live sets in recent festival memory. Whether it be Field Day, Laneway, Falls or even Coachella, Hugo and James are proper masters in the art of turning up. Their Mixmag set has them drop an hour of deep house and nu disco to The Lab London. It’s an hour of straight beauty, perfect to have blasting while watching the sun set at your favourite beach. It’s just sublime.
LWA favourite What So Not is a proper treasure of the Aussie music scene, constantly churning out mind-bending bangers that encompass bass, hip hop, house, trap and fifty other genres that probably haven’t been invented yet. His Mixmag set sees him take to The Lab LA to celebrate the release of his debut album Not All The Beautiful Things (2018). Of course the set goes hard af, and is a beautiful reminder of why Emoh is one of the most beloved and respected EDM artists in the country.
Sydney-born Wax Motif is a serious mad-dog in the EDM world, coming through with incredible DJ sets and a distinct multi-genre approach which has helped him set himself apart from his contemporaries in a major way. Whether it be his solo singles, edits or remixes, Wax never fails to turn up a dance floor. Taking to The Lab LA way back in 2014, if was clear even then that Wax had an innate gift for the decks, his wide-encompassing tracklist making for the perfect sonic journey for the lucky punters.
Birmingham trailblazer (and former pro-footballer!) Hannah Wants has been constantly delivering quality sets for over a decade now, her DJ sets exploding with bass, tech house and techo. It’s virtually impossible for her to serve up anything that isn’t straight fire. Her Mixmag set sees her take to The Lab London for an all-vinyl speed garage & bassline set, and I swear to you, there isn’t a dull moment. She makes it look so easy too, playing between various genres and mixes that have a little something for everyone.
TQD are a UK garage and bass superpower, the trio’s debut collaborative album UKG comprised of fast-paced house bangers that capture all of the excitement of the UK garage scene and then some. It strikes the perfect balance between hard af and easy listening, finding that sweet spot in the middle that is just pure ecstacy. Their Mixmag set sees them take to The Lab London (like almost every set on this list), with the trio proving that they’re just as incredible live as they are as producers. It’s properly beautiful, and a true masterclass in the art of the decks.
Blackpool electro-star Little Boots is one of the most dynamic and versatile musos in the EDM scene, crafting everything from synth pop to house and disco. For over more than a decade she’s continued to reinvent herself, first being a lead-singer for Dead Disco, then becoming a producer extraordinaire impossible to not pay attention to. Her Mixmag set is filled with gorgeous disco vibes as she turns The Lab LA inside out with a mad track listing and quality mixing skills. Proper body-freeing stuff, it’s got us missing those pool side dance-offs for sure.
Well, I hope you enjoy all of those! No doubt we’re missing DJ sets more than ever, but it’s gonna be so beautiful when we’re back on those dance floors, losing ourselves to the undeniable beauty that is EDM…
