There’s no question that Aussie music videos are truly something special. They’re flavoured with a certain hunger for success and love of country, all the while being incredibly carefree and fun-loving. They’re also mad diverse, ranging from your classic surf videos to tour footage and everything in between. They’re totally expansive, and there’s a little something for everyone in the vast cornucopia of music videos we have to offer. A personal favourite are those classic vids that capture the simple beauties of Aussie life, that engage in all the glorious stereotypes such as long af hair and beautiful beaches, with just a hint of nostalgia peppered throughout. They’re completely gorgeous, and wildly unappreciated. So, with that in mind, we thought we’d check out ten music videos that are so bloody Aussie it hurts. Check it below.
Surf, sangas, and soaring skies. Not to mention some gorgeous VBs that make for perfect sausage flavouring. But seriously, Hockey Dad’s ‘Seaweed’ music video captures the beauty of the Aussie surf like no other, as best mates Zach and Billy embody the gorgeous qualities associated with being a fiend for a good wave. With the purity of life that makes Wollongong so damn special shining through, ‘Seaweed’ is without a doubt an enchanting snapshot of the simple pleasures of Aussie life. We also gotta mention that the clip was completely filmed by both Zach and Billy (neupure), with Billy on directing and editing duties. What a vid man.
Okay, let’s be real, this is a quintessential road trip song if there ever was one. I think we’ve all had this beauty blaring in our beat up cars as we’ve road tripped down the coast at one time or another. The Byron Bay band inhabit all the hilarious and loveable pastimes that we’ve all indulged in, or wished we indulged in, in our formative years. Hanging with your mates, playing Skate 3 and causing an absolute ruckus before heading home for pizza and jams with your best mates. Sounds like heaven to me.
‘I don’t know why/ It is I’ll live or die/ What I’m doing’s wrong or right/ So I’m just gonna enjoy the sunshine’.
Is there a more perfect summary for Aussie life? Just beautiful hey.
Okay, I’m gonna go out on a limb and say it. Aussie doggos are the purest and most beautiful doggos in the world. I mean, Mallrat’s family dog Charlie inspired this heart warmer, what other evidence do you need? But honestly, this is probably the most vulnerable we’ve ever seen Brisbane trailblazer Mallrat, as we follow her ventures through Aussie towns and nature, all the while blessing us with visuals of her super wholesome doggo Charlie. She really captures that purity of that classic Aussie bond between a person and their dog, the likes of which you won’t find in many other parts of the world, not to the same extent at least. If Australia ever needed a dog ambassador, we’re 100% convinced Charlie would be the perfect fit.
Another classic vid that captures the beauties of being out with your best mates, ‘Knees’ follows Ocean Alley as they enjoy a chilled out day of bevs and sun aboard the ‘Heemskerk’, with not a worry in the world. It’s no wonder they’re one of the nation’s favourite bands, with their easy-going and fun-loving attitude coming through everything they do. With The Sauce’s sick film skills firing on all cylinders, we get a peak inside the lives of the six-piece as they enjoy the simple pleasures of being out on the water, a place that despite their intense touring and crazy lives, they always manage to get back to.
Cronulla’s Ruby Fields is an absolute rock star in every sense of the word, her down to earth personality embedded in her honest lyrics, soulful vocals and gorgeous music videos. ‘Climate’ perfectly captures the indescribable beauty of Aussie camping trips, from rocking up to that small town pub with your best mates to that irreplaceable campfire banter. We might not be able to go on those camping trips any time soon, but ‘Climate’ is a good substitute until we can.
The visualiser for Hi This Is Flume doesn’t necessarily capture the classic surf vibes and chilled out nature of Aussie life as the other vids on this list do, but what it does do is show off Western Australia in all it’s beauty, harshness and danger that makes the Aussie landscape so damn alluring. Featuring salt lakes, beaches and dirt roads juxtaposed with Flume’s experimental symphonies, the visualiser is a 42 minute journey that takes you into the raw heart of Australia, reminding us all of the natural beauty we’ve been blessed with.
Cruisy, mellow and overflowing with good vibes. Surf princess Kita Alexander’s ‘Between You & I’ truly showcases the sun kissed wonder that is synonymous with Aussie life. Giving us a glimpse of down to earth small town living as she serenades us into the next realm (all the while making cycling through town look fun af), it’s impossible not to feel happy, uplifted, and desperate for some sun after watching this beauty.
Okay, before you say it, we know the obvious choice is ‘Australia Street’. Hell, it has ‘Australia’ in the title. It’s a total unfiltered look into the rowdiness and overall love of life that defines the great suburb of Newtown. But ‘Our Town’ is so damn under appreciated man, we couldn’t not include it on this list. If there had to be a spiritual successor to the ‘Australia Street’ music video, it would without a doubt be ‘Our Town’. Even the opening shot of a bloke smoking a dart while cradling a footy is just overwhelmingly Aussie. As we follow the boys venturing through Newtown, we see that gorgeous love of mates and pub shine through ever so strongly. Downing some bevs with your mates at the local. Man I miss it.
A band on the rise, a band with a pure authenticity that you just can’t fake. ‘Good For You’ is a swirling melting pot of youth, hunger and talent that seems to come super easy to any Aussie band trying to make it. Filmed at the PS Art Space in Fremantle, the four-piece continue to prove why they’re such a weapon on the local music scene, with their intricate and quirky style on and off the camera perfectly complimenting their nostalgic yet fresh tunes. It’s impossible not to feel entertained, inspired, and just in awe of the group after watching the ‘Good For You’ music video, as they inhabit everything great about our music scene and more.
Melbourne’s own Angie McMahon is a rising talent whose star shines brighter than the eye can handle, with her debut album Salt absolutely exploding on the air waves from the moment it was released. ‘Keeping Time’ sees the wicked songstress navigate life as she tours Australia, doing everything from lugging gear through crowded airports to killing it on stage at Splendour in the Grass. “A rock song that I wrote about wishing I could write a rock song” as described by McMahon, it’s safe to say she’s more than perfected the art of the rock song, and the accompanying music video is every bit as rock and kick ass as you’d expect.
Damn, we really have some amazing talent in Australia, and our music videos are the perfect reflection of what makes our home the greatest place on Earth. Although COVID-19 and all its annoyingness has us locked down for the moment, these vids are definitely a reminder of the beautiful world outside our homes, as well as the incredible Aussie spirit that no virus can tarnish, no matter what light beer it’s named after…
