Earlier this week, former High Court Judge Ian Callinan handed in a report to the NSW government regarding the lockout laws, suggesting that they be pushed back by 30 minutes.

While this might be a step in the right direction, it’s clear that a mere 30 minute gap won’t be enough to repair the severe damage inflicted upon Sydney’s nightlife – and the Keep Sydney Open movement has responded with vigour. Back in February, an estimated 15000 people marched through the CBD to protest the lockout laws – with DJs, bands and guest speakers further congregating in Hyde Park to show their support. Now, it’s time for Round 2.

Keep Sydney Open announced the event last night, saying that “Thirty minutes will not bring punters back into the city, it will not save businesses on the brink from closure, it will not bring a sense of pride back to Sydney and nor will it impress the international eyes who are watching this saga unfold from afar.”

Keep Sydney Open have further suggested other methods to reduce violence, saying “We could improve transport, implement integrated urban planning reform, develop better police strategies, encourage more diverse and inclusive activities after-dark, devise anti-violence education and intervention campaigns, extend small-bar licenses and appoint a Night Mayor, or someone equally badass.”

Judging from the first Keep Sydney Open rally, then this will be massive. If you’re someone who likes to party, takes pride in Sydney’s music scene, or simply believes that adults should be treated like adults and shouldn’t be given a curfew because of a few bad eggs, then we urge you to head on down and be very vocal about where you stand! Get your wittiest signs ready and head down to the CBD on Sunday October 9, with more information to come. Keep up to date with all of the details via the Facebook event right here.
