We premiered their stunning single ‘Does This Last‘ back in February, and now Boo Seeka are back with a brand new album titled Never Too Soon.

‘Does This Last’ serves as the opening track for the band’s new full-length, which swirls its way through 10 more tracks of emotive electronica. To celebrate today’s release, Boo Seeka have handed us an exclusive track-by-track breakdown of the project, detailing some of the stories and inspirations behind each of the 11 gems. You can listen to Never Too Soon below, alongside anecdotes from the creators.

Additionally, Boo Seeka will be heading on a very thorough national tour throughout October and November – scroll down to the bottom to find the dates, and grab your tickets right here:

1. DOES THIS LAST

This song was huge for us in many ways. We hadn’t released a song in what felt like forever; instead we were constantly touring and writing on the road. We got back from our first trip to America and slaved away in the studio trying to finish a song called ‘Push’. We were struggling creatively, emotionally and personally leading to the most tense moment in our history. Over the period of a few days we broke down in the studio, tempers flared, tears were shed and Boo and I decided we’d had enough.

He came around to my place that night, we cracked 4 bottles of red and he sang this line; “Why does this only last for so long? Could I be wrong? Should I be asking myself while I’m high?” We stayed up as long as it took and finished the song. It was the fastest a song has ever come together for us and the first song that we shed a tear over together. Our blood, sweat and tears went into that song. It’ll always live close to our hearts.

2. HUMANS

This was the last song we wrote for the album. We prioritised it on the strength of Boo’s vocals in the original demo. It came together pretty quickly, inspired by the breakdown of a relationship. We just bought a Yamaha DX7 synth (used a lot in the 80s) and you can hear some of its tones drifting through this song.

3. ARGO MISTY

One of the oldest songs on the album and we’ve played it a few times over the past 2.5 years. It started its life in a jam in my bedroom. Boo on synths and I got on the drums, we banged out some music, Boo laid his vocals down in our producer Ian Pritchett’s studio and I build some vox samples and scratches to fill in the gaps.

4. GOLD SAIL

We brought the tempo of the album up here and kept the psych atmosphere of Argo to tell the story of this trip. I suppose the gold sail is a ‘Jeffrey’ of sorts and the song is an internal journey.

5. BROOKLYN

We’d had this song for a while but it’d been lacking some backbone. I’d been listening to a lot of Kaytranada at the time and vibed off the way he produces his drums. I rewrote the drums for the track in a green room in Indianapolis and the track had the pop we were after. Every tour we’ve played this song on Boo has actually sung different lyrics. In the recording process we pushed ourselves and Boo pumped out new lyrics that we had to ditch the old ones for.

6. TURN UP THE LIGHT

We had a couple of days off while we were in Nashville earlier this year. Boo was going through a pretty tough time and sang some lyrics that became the bridge while we were at our agents place. Whilst soundchecking in Columbus a week later we had a bit of spare time and started jamming on stage, in a different key and tempo to that Nashville melody, he sang the line; “I’ll always be thinking of you, laying in my arms” which became the chorus.

We only married these two ideas when we were back in my bedroom and I played a chord progression on the piano, layered that synth and built a beat with the help of Boo smashing his rings on a hi hat and snare. Our producer Ian Pritchett sprinkled his magic dust on the track and it was done. This makes up one of the group of four songs on the album that stemmed from Boo’s rocky emotional state at the time.

7. OH MY

A bit of an older song, originally written in early 2016 we created our own samples, layered synths and big beats for this one. It’s a live favourite. Sometimes people find an old sample and try and polish it up to sound modern and hi-fi. We went the other way and played a piano line, chopped it and reduced its quality to make it sound like we’ve sampled something old and grainy.

8. CALLING OUT

If you’ve been to a show of ours you’ll know this song. We’ve played it live for almost two years and get asked about it pretty constantly. It was great fun to record, and the last song we recorded vocals for. We had a bit of fun and invited some friends round to the studio to record the group vocals you’ll hear at the end.

9. ONE DAY PT. 1

We had this pretty drum heavy, hip-hop based song that we weren’t satisfied with. So we did what we find often works for us and stripped the song back to its core, leaving a pretty beautiful soundscape of music. Rather than try and rebuild a whole drum track and song around what was left, we decided to create something that was strong and emotive from front to back regardless of its duration. This was what was left over and we love it. One day we might revisit this one for a part two. Pun unintended.

10. YOU AND ME

We get Madonna meets Massive Attack vibes on this one. We built the music to complement the power of the vocal, doubling the vocal melody of the chorus with one of the only acoustic guitars on the album.

11. CALM SYMPHONY

This song was written in one of our first sessions writing together. We thought it was a nice way to end the album, a throwback to the genesis of our style.
