Sydney’s kate moth are taking over.

It feels only fitting that we on the East Coast are experiencing an absolute swarming of Bogong moths right around the time of the release of kate moth’s debut EP, No Key Sharp Enough. The moths embark on a migration of up to 1,000km not long after reaching adulthood, which is kinda the perfect time to be listening to kate moth: when you’re young, heading into the unknown and trying to figure it all out as you go.

No Key Sharp Enough is a swaying mix of euphoria and angst that could simultaneously be the catalyst for a breakdown or the thing that snaps you out of one. It’s got some beautiful romantic moments (and some of the loveliest guitar work I’ve heard on an Aus album in a longggggggg time), but is also forlorn and at times defeated. I don’t think the words “I’m crashing out” have ever been sung so craftily and controlled.

That’s the kind of duality that’s gonna have us coming back again and again for a listen.

To celebrate the release, we thought it would be good to look at the EP as if it were some sort of self-help book. A track-by-track, but with a little bit of mental medicine in there too. Does that make sense? Maybe not, but you can read guitarist Seth Gabrielsson’s thoughts while listening to the EP, and if it helps, that’s just a plus.

Long live Bogong moths. Long live kate moth.

(You’re not a) Genius

The title says it all – you don’t need to be a genius to contribute something of value. If you have a great idea – lucky you! Make it as great as it can be…but take care in how you congratulate yourself. Chances are there are a lot of people around you who made you what you are. You don’t need to look very far at how unhappy and globally destructive these self-proclaimed ‘geniuses’ are…

Run Generation

Sometimes you just got to run.

Holly Go Lightly

Tell them you love them even if there is a time limit on things. Whether their visa is running out, their heart is elsewhere or they’ve just gotten into that course overseas…don’t let that stop you from telling them how you feel. Just be careful when giving your heart to a wild thing….

Too Late To Go Outside

Sometimes it’s just too late to go outside. Don’t get FOMO. Settle in, relax and know that there will be an eternity of weekends to come. Sometimes the world from your window is just as interesting.

Heartattack

Tell them you love them even if you’re not sure they’ll say it back. Don’t worry, you won’t have a heartattack.

Overnight Sensation

You’re gonna make it. You ARE a genius. You’re gonna be famous and have everything you ever wanted and all will be rosy. You will never crash and burn. And It’s gonna happen overnight. Just make sure you are well rested.
