In past years, the Hottest 100 has taken place on Australia Day, January 26 – which despite being a national public holiday, represents a day of mourning for many Indigenous Australians. A national poll held by the radio station showed that 60% of the 65,000 respondents were in favour of changing the date of the Hottest 100.
“It’s fair to say there’s been increasing debate around 26 January and there are a lot of perspectives on what it means to different Australians. As the public broadcaster representing all Australians, triple j and the ABC doesn’t take a view in the discussions,” a statement said.
“However, in recent years the Hottest 100 has become a symbol in the debate about Australia Day. The Hottest 100 wasn’t created as an Australia Day celebration. It was created to celebrate your favourite songs of the past year. It should be an event that everyone can enjoy together – for both the musicians whose songs make it in and for everyone listening in Australia and around the world. This is really important to us.”
In 2018, the Hottest 100 will now take place on Saturday, January 27. It will also become a two-day event in 2018, with places 101-200 playing on Sunday, January 28. It’s a big move from the station, but one that will see the event become more inclusive from hereon in. We’re looking forward to 2018’s countdown – see the official announcement below:
