Hamish Blake recently stepped into a podcast with Australia’s favourite journalists, The Betoota Advocate to discuss his long and adventurous career, outlining one moment where an unknown individual from triple j attempted to assertively sign the duo back in 2006.
“We had someone from triple j tell us, ‘We want you to do Drive'”, Blake recalled. “This is just before we started doing Drive in Melbourne, and we were like, ‘Oh we signed with commercial radio,’ and they were like, ‘Cancel your contract, if you go commercial you’ll never get to work at triple j.’
“We went, ‘Okay… but we’ve signed with them, I’m so sorry, but we’ve signed’… They were like, ‘This is the moment’. They did the hard sell of going, ‘This is the moment where you define your legacy. You shred that contract and you come to triple j.’”
Of course, we don’t think that Hamish & Andy are too fussed about missing out on the opportunity, given that they went on to have the highest-rating radio show in Australian history under Austereo. You can listen to The Betoota Advocate podcast (proudly sponsored by Budgy Smugglers, of course) right here.
