It’s pretty rare that a group of young musicians are able to hit their stride on their debut recordings. Normally, getting comfortable enough in the studio to produce music that’s emotively powerful and sonically captivating is the kind of thing that takes years of experience – though that doesn’t seem to be the case with Perth indie-pop outfit Cloning.
Their debut single ‘Special’ has already amassed thousands of streams in a matter of weeks, which is a clear indication of their ability to write tunes that both hit you right in the feels and contain lingering melodic motifs that you can’t escape from. “I’d like to think that ‘Special’ can be pretty open-ended and that it could mean different things to different people. It centres around the importance of getting the most out of life and living up to your potential because life can be so fleeting and unpredictable” vocalist Felix explains.
Melancholic and eery at times, with hints of Radiohead and Slowdive, the four-piece took the bones of the song to the studio but allowed themselves room to experiment. “We write our music by recording at Felix’s house and tinkering with the recordings. So going into the studio we already had some clear ideas for how we wanted ‘Special’ to sound, especially with the drums and guitars. Dave [Parkin] our engineer helped us to realise the sounds that we were after.”

The video, which was directed and edited by Jake Crawford, is fittingly colourful, and the many fades and overlaid shots really allow the viewer to appreciate the many layers of the tune. Here, the group also offer a taste of their live show which has been dazzling punters on the West Coast for a couple of years now.
‘Special’ is taken from the band’s forthcoming EP Pillars Of Salt, which is due out later on in 2019. But if you can’t wait that long to get your Cloning fix, you can catch them launching ‘Special’ at Mojo’s Bar in Fremantle July 25th (tickets and info here).
