Sydney outfit Flowertruck have made quite the name for themselves in the local music scene over the past couple of years, with the band’s indie rock styling drawing rave reviews from fans and earned comparisons to acts like The Talking Heads, The Go-Betweens and more. On their latest album Partly Cloudy, however, they’ve continued to experiment and craft their own lane creatively, which can also be said for their latest music video for ‘Quiet!’ (which we’re premiering today).
Filmed on Super 8, the new clip (directed by longtime friend of the band, Tim Baker) sees the four-piece take to Austimner public oval in between harsh NSW rain for a high-energy rendition of the track, and enactment of its lyrics. The feel-good vibe of the video makes for an interesting juxtaposition to the subject matter of the song itself, which is centred around those millions of chaotic thoughts that race around your brain at night, from childhood trauma to the adult drama that happened just the other day.
The clip for ‘Quiet!’, however, cuts through all of the above, instead flipping the mental frenzy the song is about for a highlight reel of special moments and memories. It’s a sentiment most fully-realised at around two minutes in as the band play the song out in one of those iconic primary school parachutes that played a part in every Aussie’s childhood, with the band’s following antics (including playing the song out while sharing a fold-out bed, in MATCHING pyjamas) flush with a youthful euphoria that’s totally invigorating.
Speaking on the nostalgic nature of the visuals, the band explain, “We really wanted to draw on some of those long-lost childhood references, like the giant rainbow parachutes from school and the matching pyjama sets, to bring a really playful sense of nostalgia to the music video. Shooting the whole thing on Super 8 film was our way of paying homage to those iconic Australian music videos from the 80s that we love so much. The whole thing feels like a long lost memory for us.”
It’s another light-hearted offering from the group with a hell of an emotional punch. Be sure to check out Flowertruck’s clip for ‘Quiet!’ above and their upcoming tour dates below. You can cop tickets here.
