Having burst into the earholes of listeners around the world after Spotify placed them in their R&B Feels playlist, it’s fair to say Sydney duo Sadboy Season AKA Gabriel Deburgh and producer Jordan Coles have even exceeded their own expectations for their debut release. Finding their track alongside moody R&B artists such as Drake, BANKS and The Weeknd – all of which they list as influences – is about as good as gets for an emerging act.
Listening to ‘Always On My Mind’ it’s pretty easy to guess why the music industry overlords at Spotify are as into it as we are. Vocally the track felivers in a big way, with smooth lines and some big hooks spread over a stuttery beat and spacey synth samples. If it’s not hitting you right in the feels, you may want to go and get your heart tested.
Directed by Coles himself, the video was shot in isolation and paints a gloomy dystopian picture of life in the big city. It’s a stirring collage of ephemeral moments shared between the duo, complete with rainy windows, solo showers, and bold neon washes – it sums up the sadboy stylings of the track nicely.
