We first met Girl And Girl last year when SXSW Sydney was on and frontman Kai and drummer Liss hopped onto a bus with us and talked shit over a couple of beers. Admittedly, we were a little late to the party, but since then have unashamedly jumped on the bandwagon and discovered there’s something special about this group. Their music has a raw and unfiltered feeling which elevates it far above your run-of-the-mill “indie” and gives it a near-euphoric flavour.
‘Hello’ is a key example of that. With a fittingly twitchy 3/4 beat, the tune is sees guitars duelling over scattered vocals with Kai delivering vocals in an off-the-cuff way that feels like he’s reading directly from the pages of a scrappy journal. “It’s about romanticising your own misery. Letting those deep, dark, dirty thoughts take over. Understanding that even if you could pull yourself out, you wouldn’t because the constant stress and worry is far too familiar and comfortable.” says Kai.
Directed by Tayla Lauren, the video captures the energy above with Kai making calls to a not-so-receptive institution who’ve heard it all before from him. The rest of the band play workers at said institution and slip into their roles as Kai’s shoulders to cry on effortlessly – maybe they’re drawing on some real experiences there…
‘Hello’ is taken from their forthcoming album Call A Doctor which you can can pre-order/save right here. And be sure to grab some tickets to their Aus tour in April, which follows a US tour with Royel Otis including a stop at SXSW. We have a feeling the G&G bandwagon is about to go into overload:
