From all accounts, Lightning Ridge is the kind of place that is so full of character and mystery that you only ever see in films. Known for its opal-rich history, the town is full of secretive prospectors, friendly locals and homes made of any kind of at-hand recycled material – the perfect setting for a comedy or horror movie. It’s also the spot where Sydney artist Lady Lyon and her team chose to shoot her cinematic clip for ‘Surf’s Up’.
Having dropped a couple of weeks back, the track is a swaggering bluesy number driven by guitars and Lyon’s vocals. Delivering a brooding performance, she sways between lofty verses and a pre-chorus that is inescapably catchy. Lyrically, it deals with recovering from a soured relationship. “Surf’s Up is about trying to get back to yourself after being completely rinsed by a relationship. It’s an ode to self-redemption, to finding all the pieces and knowing how they’ll fit together again,” Lady Lyon says.
The clip, which was directed by Claire Salter and shot by Liam French, captures the dark, yet dreamy bones of the ‘Surf’s Up’ perfectly. Following Lyon as she journeys through Lightning Ridge in Frank (that’s the truck’s name), the visuals give a bewitching look at the town whilst also maintaining plenty of narrative intrigue. It’s the kind of clip that feels part music video, part art piece, and we can’t wait to see what this team have in the works for us next.
In support of the single, Lady Lyon will be taking the stage at the Petersham Bowling Club on November 13th and 14th with support from Kev Walsh – tickets and info here:
