Queensland-bred, Sydney-based artist Zekiel returns with a three minute masterclass on cadence.

Before the track is a minute old Zekiel’s voice undergoes two major transformations. First from a deep, modulated intro (which also serves as the second half of the chorus later in the track) through to his signature half-sung heavy flow, and then again to a magnetic melody. On the track, Zekiel says, “It’s a metaphor for when someone is too cool, or thinks they’re too cool, for you. It’s about me realising at the very last moment that the girl I thought I wanted to be with wasn’t at all what I wanted!”

We’ve all been there, and it’s a metaphor that plays out quite literally in the accompanying music video. In the clip Zekiel runs through your typical high school day skipped, kicking things off with approximately 15 Weet-Bix before teeing up a Boost Juice rendezvous at the local shopping centre. As you might expect, things don’t go exactly according to plan, with an unnamed love interest giving Zekiel the runaround. Shot and directed by DRXL and Zekiel, the clip has a certain DIY feel to it. “All the cameras were models sold/designed before the 2000’s. We shot this video in the Gold Coast. We had a non-existent budget and an idea for a lo-fi clip to show a bit more of my personality. Making fun of myself, looking like a fool most of the time but we had an absolute ball shooting it.” Watch Zekiel chase (his own) tail and drop a little slice of wisdom in the video below and stay tuned for more to come from the talented rapper:
