Over the coming months, we’ll be blessed with Australian tours from UK heavyweights like Wiley, Dizzee Rascal and Stormzy, but equally as exciting is the army of hungry local emcees who are stepping up to the plate. Nerve is one of the most notable, having recently teamed up with Wombat for the impressive Night Shift EP, with the duo also spitting live on the ‘Get Bodied’ tour along the East Coast.
Here, Nerve and Wombat are joined by a third party, Fraksha for a new single, ‘On Lock.’ On top of being one of Australian grime’s most seasoned emcees, Fraksha is also the mastermind behind the infamous Fully Gassed and 50/50 gigs, as well as the Grime Down Under mixtapes that have shone light on emcees and producers alike.
While the three have performed together – notably on the lengthy, rampaging Triple J grime takeover – this marks the first time they’ve officially linked on a track. On top of spitting a verse, ‘On Lock’ was produced, mixed and mastered by Nerve himself, who provides a skittering, squealing instrumental that oozes with adrenaline. All emcees deliver assertively, while the video (filmed by Carl Allison) sees the trio roam the Melbourne night with Air Max and Polo jackets, with the uniform harking back to Fraksha’s swoosh and horse-heavy ‘Creepin.‘
“I went for a more garage/old school sound with the instrumental which turned out to work really well. We all recorded our verses shortly after the most recent Fully Gassed event in August while the hype was still about,” Nerve says of the track. “In September, Wombat, Fraksha and I linked up before our live Triple J radio set to record the film clip with Carl Allison, and it came out perfect.”
Watch ‘On Lock’ first below, and expect more from Nerve and his colleagues soon:
