Comprised of cousins Anthony Bobadilla & Justin Nacua, INQ. (which is short for Inquisitive Minds) champion introspective lyrics that take influence from the more conscious corners of hip-hop, teamed with dreamy, off-kilter production. It’s certainly a move away from the maximalist, flashy trap that seems to be dominating the new wave of Australian artists, and we’re welcoming it with open ears.
‘Ecstatic’ is a highlight from their True & Livin’ EP that dropped back in May, where the two tackle both rapping and auto-tuned crooning over a lullaby of a beat delivered by Pökari. The result is an emotive track that doesn’t come off as melodramatic or overbearing, and a slick introduction to INQ. for those who aren’t familiar yet. The video, shot by Rough Drahft, stays true to the duo’s clear and concise vision.
INQ. will be celebrating their new release with a performance at Basement Sessions 005 this Friday, August 3 at Tokyo Sing Song in Newtown. There, they’ll be joined by their Culture Club colleagues for a huge night of hip-hop and beat-based music. Watch ‘Ecstatic’ below, and if you reside in Sydney, head on down tomorrow evening:
