Barley Passable weave a little away from their funky tropical jams and give us something a bit darker to munch on. In the months since its release, Together — the collab-heavy EP from Barley Passable — has become a playlist staple. Filled with upbeat, summery hooks, it’s one of those drops that has become a friend to anyone who gets aux cord anxiety, with songs that suit every moment: road-tripping, pre-drinks, dance floor, just maybe not funerals (but, also, maybe?). Today, they’re sharing a brand new track that delves deeper, darker, and harder…
‘Sell My Soul’ is what the band, which is made up of Kai Ollmann and Davy Brown, would sound like in the “upside down” of Stranger Things. It’s a synthtacular journey that is gloriously groovy, with a perfect blend of anthemic moments and catchy melodic sequences. With nods to Daft Punk, Justice, and perhaps even John Carpenter, there’s no doubt that this is Barley Passable at their moodiest, and we’re bloody loving it.
The accompanying video sees them team up with two former collaborators: Bryn Chapman-Parish of Mac The Knife (and Heartbreak High) and singer-songwriter Amber Rose. Directed by Jarad Travers, the track gets a surreal interpretation, with the clip full of meticulously staged shots that look like they’re taken from a kinky manga comic. It’s excellently executed.
