With her debut EP attracting the attention of labels in Asia and Canada, we can imagine Singaporean dream-pop artist Linying’s shows at this years Bigsound will be packed. Understandably, members of the Australian and international music scene will be eager to see what all the fuss is about when she takes to the stage next week.
Her latest track ‘Paycheck’ is a great example of her ability to deliver melancholic and visceral electronic tunes with surrealist lyricism that dips into the deeper sides of the human psyche. “It’s a song about admitting defeat and accepting that the narrative of what happened is split between the two people who share in it, and into two versions of the same truth that will exist concurrently, forever diverging,” Linying says. “Losing that collective memory, a version of the truth you once worked hard for and held onto together, is also kind of labour that’s gone to waste, hence the song title.”
But what sort of tunes inspire her? Check out the video below as Linying takes us to her favourite record store and picks out some gems, and be sure to catch her shows at Bigsound in Brisbane next week.
