With J.Cole’s anticipated new album the Off-Season set to drop later this week, the North Carolina rhymer has gone a step above his usual release schedule and dropped a documentary that chronicles the creation of the album.
Also titled the Off-Season, the doo sees the ‘No Role Models’ rapper give some serious insight into the conceptual thought that went into the new album, opening the 12 minute feature explaining why he called the project the Off-Season to his “A Lot” collaborator 21 Savage.
Explaining it to Savage (and all of us) Cole throws a real one, making reference to his mixtape the Warm Up from 2009, saying “One more time before I leave, before I feel fulfilled in this game, let me try to reach new heights from a skill level standpoint.”
Other notable moments from the doco include Cole revisiting his old home in New York City as well as him getting nostalgic on how Pharrell inspired him to make music with a schedule in mind.
Some more juicy parts however include Cole teasing the albums to come, specifically The Fall-Off and It’s A Boy, saying “There’s songs on here, in this whole Fall-Off era, that I’ve been sitting on for years,” he explained. “Just tweaking, making better. Even like, ‘the Middle Child,’ that was for the Fall-Off. … I still got more work to do, on the Fall-Off specifically, I got a few more songs I need to write. I got tinkering I need to do.”
“On my career bucket list, there remain a few more items to check off before I give myself permission to enter whatever the next chapter of my life may be,” he added.
