Having nearly amassed 50K streams on Spotify in about a month, it’s safe to say ‘Choirboy’ is on its way to becoming one of Lakyn’s most popular tracks – and it makes sense. Much like his 2018 & Pains EP the tune showcases his unmistakable flow and delivery, backed by slick neo-soul instrumentation. However, ‘Choir Boy’ also feels like a departure or expansion of sorts, with his raw energy bubbling through the vocals in a way we haven’t heard previously.
Lyrically, the track centres around finding solace within your situation, whatever that may be. “’Choir Boy’ is about timing and being at peace with where you’re at,” Lakyn says. “It’s about knowing that wherever you are with your expectations, it’s important to remind yourself that you’re exactly where you’re meant to be.”
In the video, we see him simply singing into a microphone in an empty hall, wearing a shiny silver hoodie. Interestingly, he is positioned off the stage, as if to remove the performance aspect of the video, allowing his voice to really pull focus. It’s a direct reflection of his confidence in his ability and awareness of his strengths.
“I wanted to make something simple that doesn’t distract people from listening to the lyrics and my voice as that’s where my truth lays, I also know people have imaginations and I want them to use it,” he says. “I write my songs in hopes that people can close their eyes and be taken to a similar place that these songs take me.”
You can catch Lakyn on the Choir Boy tour in Melbourne (November 7th) and Sydney (November 18th) – info here. But for now, check out the behind-the-scenes look at how the track came together in the studio:
