In the lead-up to his upcoming sophomore album dropping later this year, American rapper Young Thug performed a set of unreleased tracks in the latest instalment of NPR’s ‘Tiny Desk Concert.’ Backed by the gardens of the Houdini estate and a live band (which later included Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker), Young Thug offered up unheard songs from his latest project like “Die Slow,” “Droppin Jewels,” “Hate the Game,” and “Tick Tock.”
Young Thug amped-up the energy later in the performance with “Ski,” a Gunna-assisted track from his early 2021 release, Slime Language 2. As the title of his upcoming album suggests (Punk), the set sees Young Thug adopt a new rock-esque sound, switching out the trap beats of his earlier discography and leaning more heavily into the instrumentation of the band. Travis Barker’s appearance only solidifies this musical direction ahead of Punk‘s release this October.
Barker has been involved in a slew of big-name hip-hop projects this year, lending his legendary drum set to artists like Machine Gun Kelly, Willow Smith and Trippie Redd.
