In between helping to nurture Sydney’s burgeoning hip hop scene and making laps across the country for live shows, Sydney-based MC and producer has found time to write new music, and today we’re getting a look at the latest fruits of his labour in his new single, ‘Go Back Home’
A sonic and thematic departure from the high octane ‘Work Don’t Stop’, the latest offering from the one stop shop sees him reflect on his roots and his desire to return to his African homeland atop a melancholic array of synths and drums. Proving that he’s much more than your standard hip hop artist, Skeez opts to try his hand at autoutuned singing along with his usual rapping of choice, withe result being a tender and emotive ballad on identity, freedom and homesickness.
The latter of the three is especially present throughout Skeez’ lyricism on the track, with the Western Sydney mainstay taking pains to show just how much he longs to return to his home of South Sudan, with an especially pertinent lyric being “Go back home to the motherland so I need a plan/I lost my touch with my people so I’m feeling off” in what’s a heart-wrenching 180 to the previous works from the MC that have been full of optimism and pride. Here, it’s clear he’s struggling to reconnect with the heritage that underpins so much of his artistry. It’s a solemn, but invigorating insight into the many artistic layers that make up the man.
The accompanying video follows Skeez as he makes his way through lush surrounds, making his way through coastal waterfronts and bushland as he performs the track in its entirety. It’s a perfect compliment to the sonics that sit atop it, and gives a chance for Skeez to physically embody the emotions of ‘Go Back Home’ in a way that music just cant. Interwoven through it all is an array of ocean-focused shots as Skeez symbolises his desire to make the voyage to the other side of the world, with the man himself stating, “After so many years living abroad and growing up into a man, I’ve decided I need to go back home and meet my family.”
Needless to say, if you thought you had the measure of Big Skeez or knew his music inside and out, ‘Go Back Home’ is proof there’s so much more to the man than what meets the eye. Be sure to check it out above and buy/stream it here.
