The Social Network hit cinemas in 2010, quickly cementing its place in cinema history as perhaps the most famous film to explore the evolution of the internet and social media, through its telling of Facebook’s rise to prominence.
Now, a new film, BlackBerry, seemingly hopes to fill those big Silicon Valley-shaped shoes (albeit with more humour).
Directed by Canadian actor/director Matt Johnson (Operation Avalanche, The Dirties), the film charts the rise (and inevitable fall) of the company behind the world’s very first smartphone and the challenges faced by its co-founders, Mike Lazaridis and Doug Frenin.
BlackBerry stars Johnson alongside Jay Baruchel (who you might recognise from films like She’s Out Of My League, This Is The End and Tropic Thunder), as well as Glenn Howerton, Saul Rubinek, Cary Elwes, Michael Ironside, Rich Sommer, SungWon Cho and Michelle Giroux.
Against a backdrop of glorious 90s tech fashion (including plenty of sweatbands and square frames), the film promises “a whirlwind ride through a ruthlessly competitive Silicon Valley at breakneck speeds”.
Having just premiered at SXSW, BlackBerry is set to hit theatres on May 12. Check out the trailer below.
