Frequent Australian visitor Hudson Mohawke is bound to deliver the heaviest and sweatiest set at this year’s edition of Laneway Festival, with a strong preference for electronica anthems that get the dancefloor heaving. He crafted 2012’s favourite festival anthem in ‘Higher Ground’ alongside Lunice, and followed it up with ‘Chimes’ in 2014 – a belter filled with ominous horns and harsh grunts that set a commanding tone.

Remember how good it was when DJ Levins dropped ‘Sorry’ at Meredith Music Festival? Imagine if CHVRCHES surprised the Laneway audiences with their excellent cover of his Purpose single ‘What Do You Mean?’ We can just imagine the hoards of conflicted hipsters who still don’t know if it’s okay to be a Belieber, but we think that this would be a Laneway moment for the ages and a major incentive to catch the Scottish trio.

It’s one month until DMA’s unveil their debut album ‘Hills End’, but we’d like to take it back to the single responsible for much of their success – ‘Delete’. While it was released a few years ago, DMA’s have just dropped a revamped video for ‘Delete’, with editing by LWA photographer Al Kalyk. The acoustic pop anthem is bound to be one of Laneway’s biggest sing-a-longs, and a fitting farewell to the band before they head to Europe and America, culminating in appearances at Coachella.

When Virginia rapper GoldLink was asked to describe his style, he said “Rick James meets Justin Timberlake (*NSYNC days) with Backstreet Boys and a little D12 and Tupac.” While that might be the best interview response in the history of music journalism, there are plenty of other reasons to get excited about the enigmatic emcee – and one of them is this beautifully down-tempo collaboration with our own Chet Faker. Let’s hope for an onstage reunion.

Flume changed the face of Australian electronica with his self-titled debut in 2012, and outside of his collaborations with Chet Faker and What So Not, the super-producer has remained relatively quiet – until now. Flume set the Internet ablaze with news of another album named Skin in 2016, and followed it up with its first single ‘Never Be Like You’. With emerging Canadian Kai on vocals, this slow-burner is set to send Laneway into a hazy territory.

The fact that ‘The Buzz’ slid in at Number. 8 on yesterday’s Hottest 100 should tell you that the hype for this track is unreal – a surprise hit on commercial radio as well as FBi, Triple J and at festivals around Australia. It’s just one banger from their brilliant album Dark Night Sweet Light which reached Number. 1 on the ARIA charts, while their live show is one of the country’s best. Their set at Groovin’ The Moo 2015 included a Kanye West rework, so there’s that too!

There’s always a few hip-hop drawcards that sneak their way onto the Laneway lineup, and this year they don’t get much more exciting than Vince Staples. The West Coast emcee might have been known as an Odd Future affiliate (alongside Syd Tha Kid of fellow Laneway performers The Internet), but he’s truly established himself as a solo artist – and ‘Blue Suede’ displays all of his weirdo tendencies over squealing, eerie production with enough bass to get Laneway dancefloors bouncing.

Brisbane headbangers Violent Soho are one of Australia’s great independent success stories, with their last album Hungry Ghost winning big at the 2014 AIR Awards and reaching gold status via I OH YOU Records. Album single ‘Covered In Chrome’ reached Number. 14 on the Hottest 100, with memorably chunky riffs making Violent Soho one of Laneway’s circle-pit worthy additions. Plus, their rider apparently includes clean underwear – God bless repsonsible rockers.
