Local club veteran Ember has uploaded a new mix titled ‘Life Before Lockouts’ – dedicated entirely to stars who found their feet and earned their stripes in Sydney’s club circuit.
Running at 53 minutes long, it’s a comprehensive celebration of homegrown talents who played countless sets in Darlinghurst, Kings Cross and around the CBD – from more recent breakthrough stars to selectors from the Bang Gang era and beyond. As Ember points out, some of these artists might never have succeeded if the lockout laws had been in place ten years ago, and preserving our nightlife scene is crucial for the next generation of artists to grow and thrive in Sydney.
There’s international stars like Anna Lunoe and Tommy Trash, classics from Riot In Belgium and Sneaky Sound System, and Future Classic mainstays including Flight Facilities and Touch Sensitive. All in all, it’s a reminder of how much talent we have sitting in our own backyard, and the role the nightlife scene played in hosting and developing these musicians.

So I’ve been playing in Sydney clubs for the better part of ten years and in that time so much amazing talent has been born out of the scene in this city. World famous artists who began with Kings Cross residencies, duos who met on the dancefloor, DJ’s who went home and wrote hit records after a night of inspiration in our once vibrant nightlife. I wanted to put together a mix paying tribute to these people.
