The world’s favourite snack is getting its very own biopic.

Directed by Eva Longoria (Desperate Housewives, Brooklyn 99), Flamin’ Hot is set to premiere on Hulu and Disney+ on June 9th.

It follows the story of how Richard Montañez, a former janitor at the snack food manufacturer Frito-Lay, claimed to have invented Flamin’ Hot Cheetos, and how he went from cleaning toilets to becoming a marketing executive at one of the biggest snack companies in the world.

The film is based on a true story – although Montañez’s claims that he personally invented Flamin’ Hot Cheetos are disputed by Frito-Lay, describing in an interview that while they “value Richard’s many contributions to our company, especially his insights into Hispanic consumers, but we do not credit the creation of Flamin’ Hot Cheetos or any Flamin’ Hot products to him.”

Despite the controversy, many still consider Montañez to be the father of the fiery flavour.

According to Montañez, the flavour came about after he started adding chilli powder to Cheetos, inspired by the spicy Mexican-American foods he grew up eating, like street corn.

He pitched the idea to then-CEO Roger Enrico and was eventually given the chance to present his creation in person. This led to Montañez’s promotion to a marketing executive position at Frito-Lay, where he helped to develop new products and marketing strategies targeted towards Hispanic consumers.

Flamin’ Hot stars Jesse Garcia as Montañez, alongside a star-studded cast that includes Annie Gonzales, Dennis Haysbert, Tony Shalhoub, Matt Walsh and Emilio Rivera, with a script written by Lewis Colick and Linda Yvette Chávez.

“The heart and soul and spirit of the story is true,” Colick said in a statement. “He is a guy who should remain the face of Flamin’ Hot Cheetos.”
