Did you win big in the gift department this year? More importantly, did you give generously to all your loved ones? Here, some friends of Life Without Andy name the best presents they’ve received in a lifetime of Christmas celebrations.

Happy holidays, stay safe and make sure you give a card to your Grandma.

CURREN CAPLES (PRO SKATER)

  • When I was 5 my grandparents gave me two quarter pipes from skate street, that was the best present ever.
  • I got a haro bike when I was 7, I learned I didn’t like BMX bikes.
  • I got a Sega Dreamcast I think I was 3, when I got it that was my first video game thing.
  • An iPod shuffle, it was first one out and I could skate with it.
  • And a motorized scooter, that was my sisters present but I took it.

DAVID LE’AUPEPE (GANG OF YOUTHS, SINGER)

I used to be incredibly anxious as a child and had a lot of trouble expressing it verbally, but often found myself fidgeting and unable to sit still, so one year my Mum left a giant roll of bubble wrap under the tree for me to play with when I felt too nervous to talk. You know what? I took a sheet of that stuff wherever I went for 4 months straight and it did the trick – I love bubble wrap and oddly enough, it was the most ingenious and thoughtful present I ever received. To this day, the sound and sight of bubble wrap gives me a Proustian moment. My mum is amazing.

  • Wind up Evil Knievel Stunt Cycle action figure – 1976? (Age 5) – From my parents, probably the most played with toy in the history of toys.
  • Yellow Schwinn Junior Stingray Banana seat bike – 1977 (age 6) – From my grandfather, absolutely loved him and the bike. I ended up ghost riding it down this hill and off a drop being a little shit.
  • Star Wars Millennium Falcom – 1979 (age 8) – From my Mom & Dad, blew my mind and played with it non stop until I destroyed it.
  • Sims Hosoi Skateboard – 1982 (age 11) – From my Dad, but he wouldn’t give it to me until my grades improved. I don’t think they did but he ended up giving it to me out of sheer mercy.
  • Vintage Dual turntable – 2010 (age 39) – From my lovely wife Mary. I wanted to slow down my music intake so as to better appreciate the lyrics and soak in the scratchy analog sound. I would sit there with headphones on and read the liner notes for lyrics and realize that I’ve been singing them wrong my whole life.

The best Christmas present is always Lego. Ever since I was 4 it was all I asked for from Santa. Now I ask relatives for it as a 30 year old father and they give me fucking socks instead. Fuck that. If you wanna give me socks at Christmas, make them out of Lego.

JILLIONAIRE (MAJOR LAZER, DJ & PRODUCER)

  • Lego Fire Station
  • Scalectrix Le Mans
  • BMX bike (the back pedal to brake one)

Trying to remember if I’ve gotten anything cool as an adult… I mean it’s mostly colognes and jeans once u cross 13.

CRAIG ANDERSON (PRO SURFER)

  • Nelson Mandela – Long Walk to Freedom

24 KARAT KEV (RAPPER, PALEO ENTHUSIAST, MR. HONG KONG 2016, JOURNALIST)

This year, I asked my Grandma what she wanted for Christmas. She told me to top up her Opal card with $25. That is the single best response I have ever received, and therefore the greatest gift of all. Quality banter with your friends and family is all you should ever ask for, except for maybe a Versace dog bowl and a bottle of discount Hennessy from overseas relatives passing through Duty Free.
