More festival etiquette.

Glastonbury recently sold 150,000 tickets to their 2015 festival in under 30 minutes. They haven’t even released the lineup yet. Since they’re having no trouble selling tickets, the organisers have moved onto other issues – banning the sale of Native American headdresses at the event.

A petition started by Daniel Round to ban the sale of headdresses gained only 65 signatures, but that was enough for Glastonbury to take notice and take action. “Our petition, small in numbers but passionate in support, pushed this issue right up to Emily Eavis, and she listened. Although it is only one UK festival, I hope that if we spread the news of Glastonbury’s decision online, positive discussions about the stereotyping of Native Americans and the headdress will grow in the UK and elsewhere,” he said.

Native American headdresses have been long considered inappropriate to wear to festivals due to their cultural and spiritual significance.

Meredith Music Festival has already gone one step further and banned these items from being worn at its festival altogether – will other Australian events follow suit? What other dress codes would you like to see enforced at festivals? Australian flags and being shirtless have been hot topics in past years, and we won’t be surprised if there’s more throughout 2014 and 2015.
