Here’s the thing about Halloween costumes: You either go all out, or don’t bother at all. It’s no longer kosher to slap on a pair of bunny ears with your usual kit and call it a night – October 31 is the one night you can flex your creativity to craft something clever, topical and of course, Instagram-friendly.

Unlike the dickheads who went as ‘The Ice Bucket Challenge’ or ‘Ebola’ in 2014, you also don’t want to spend your night explaining your costume to every second person you bump into. That wastes valuable time that could be spent drinking or scrolling awkwardly through your phone in the corner. Curating a Halloween costume is an art form, and it might have just been mastered by Chris Loufty and Josephine Bui.

These two just went from 0-100 in the outfit department, debuting a ‘Hotline Bling’ outfit at Goodspace Gallery’s Halloween exhibition last night. For those who don’t know, Goodspace sits above The Lord Gladstone in Chippendale, and plays host to art and illustrations from our more talented friends including James Jirat, Chris Yee, Andrew Yee and Judie So. Last night, we marveled at this glorious creation:

We thought that Drake’s latest single may have peaked at this Midnight Oil mash-up. Then came Mike Tyson’s live rendition. And now, we say hello to another chapter of the ‘Hotline Bling’ saga with this costume.

Speaking on the construction process, Chris said “it was a collaborative effort. Josie and I both really love Drake and were taken by the ‘Hotline Bling’ video, as I’m sure everyone else in the whole world was. She didn’t know what to dress up as for our Halloween exhibition at Goodspace. So I came up with the idea, she was down, and I sketched it on the back of her uni notes for an exam she had the next day.”

Each of the ‘1-800-HOTLINEBLING’ letters was carefully hand-cut and pasted onto the baby pink background, with Josephine showing zen-like patience when crafting the wearable masterpiece. “I built and painted the framework, and printed out the letters, she did the tedious and meticulous work cutting and gluing all the letters,” Chris continued.

We know there’s still three nights of partying to go – but everybody better step up their game, especially for our own soiree with Budweiser this Saturday night. It might be a little early, but we’re going to call it: This is the best Halloween costume of 2015. Let’s hope that the 6 God himself sees this. Stand and applaud.
