Anyway, Pia Mia has become one of this year’s most notable breakthrough artists, getting clubs heated with her brand of irresistibly catchy crossover R&B. Australia in particular has an affinity with the island girl, and next week she kicks off her debut tour alongside Jason Derulo, Austin Mahone and Atlanta trap legend T.I. Talk about a fuckin’ mixed bill! Hopefully T.I. plays ‘Whatever You Like‘ three times so I can propose to my imaginary girlfriend.
On her whirlwind promotional visit Down Under, I’m invited to interview Pia Mia and jump gleefully at the opportunity. I head to Universal Records in Darlinghurst, a contemporary building standing somewhere between the serenity of Hyde Park and Kings Cross institution Bada Bing Nightspot. As I wait in the lobby for Pia Mia’s arrival, the television plays ‘Dirrty‘ by Christina Aguilera, where she gyrates in leather chaps before bashing someone in a boxing ring. This is one of the greatest videos in the history of music. I shed a solitary tear of happiness because Redman is the biggest sickunt to ever be born.
Soon after, I ride the elevator upstairs before being escorted into a spacious office for the interview. There is a fedora in the corner for some reason. Pia Mia’s presence is simply striking: She wears thigh high boots and frayed denim shorts, while a white paisley bandana – tied Tupac style – sits delicately over her hair. A bottom row of grills gleam effortlessly whenever she speaks, looking to be blessed by Mr. Sparkle himself.
I introduce myself and tell Pia Mia that her coat is enjoyable – it’s baby pink, the ‘Hotline Bling‘ colourway. She laughs, and I quietly thank the 6 God for providing me with a joke that didn’t completely suck. Here is a photo of our interview, just in case you were wondering what the frontline of investigative hip-hop journalism looks like in 2015.
This brief Australian visit is just the latest adventure in Pia Mia’s increasingly hectic tour schedule. “I was in the UK for two weeks, then I was back in LA for two days, then I flew home to Guam for four days, then I had a nine hour layover in Japan before I came here. I’m here for three days, then back to LA for a week and back here for the tour,” she says. Considering I get jet lagged when flying from Sydney to Melbourne, this sounds incredibly exhausting.
Still, Pia Mia’s jam-packed itinerary is indicative of her skyrocketing success. Lead single ‘Do It Again‘ features Chris Brown & Tyga and has reached double platinum status in Australia, while the video has claimed a colossal 120 million views on YouTube. “I wanted to keep the island feel in the video because I’m from Guam, so we shot out at a beach in LA called Malibu. We had some Chamorro traditional dancers come, it was great,” she says.
Another highlight from the video is Chris Brown’s incredibly loud yellow tracksuit – maybe the first to don a monotone item of this calibre since Bruce Lee. “Chris styled himself, I love the yellow tracksuit. It was perfect. I definitely think that was such an important part of the video – If he was wearing anything else, it would’ve totally changed the vibe,” she says.
Pia Mia’s style is notable, too. She seems genuinely flattered when I say that the aforementioned thigh high boots and bandana are becoming her signature items, and are just two components of her consistently head-turning looks. “My outfits are random. It just depends on the day and what I’m feeling like. I love to wear streetwear, sometimes I like to be more girly. I love wife beaters, bandanas, flannels… For me, fashion is finding a piece that I love specifically and building everything around that,” she says. Today, it’s the ‘Hotling Bling’ coat. Shouts to Drake once again.
Amazingly, Pia Mia only attended her first concert when she was 16 years old – and three years later, she’s heading here to perform at some of Australia’s biggest venues. It’s been a rapid process. “When I was growing up, I was studying Michael Jackson and Beyonce stage performances on YouTube. I think being in the audience at 16, getting to watch my first concert, it’s a completely different thing because you get the vibe of the person… It just showed me how important it is to connect with your fans when you’re face-to-face with them,” she says.
“It’s going to be my first time performing in Australia ever, and my second tour, so it’s all going to be new to all of us. There’s going to be dancing, some acoustic stuff and my single ‘Touch‘ for the first time… It’s kind of hard for me to understand what’s going on right now – I’m just thankful to be able to share the stage with such great artists and traveling the world doing music is my dream, so it’s insane.”
Pia Mia’s fresh single ‘Touch‘ has since emerged, and it’s what she describes as “a totally different type of record than I normally do. It’s more pop, but I wanted to keep the island influence. I think everybody’s going to like it.” The video also features a sneaky cameo from O’Shea Jackson Jr of Straight Outta Compton fame, so make sure you throw up a ‘Westside’ hand signal out the window when he comes onscreen.
We spend the rest of the interview talking about how great Fetty Wap is and doing Krav Maga while listening to aggressive dubstep, which is how I like to spend all my spare time anyway. Pia Mia is cool as fuck. I hum ‘Trap Queen‘ nonchalantly in the elevator downstairs, and prepare to witness the greatness that is Pia Mia and T.I. on the same damn night. Sydney, Melbourne & Brisvegas: You’re in for a big one.
