The Aussie wins again…

Fight Island went absolutely off this past weekend, with the triple-header off to a flying start as the champs were forced to defend their belts against hungry competitors. The end of the day saw championships retained, belts change hands and reputations solidified as the fighters put it all on the line.

The main event of Usman vs Masvidal proved to be every bit as thrilling as expected, with Usman managing to retain the Welterweight title while continuing his undefeated streak in the UFC. The Nigerian 170-pounder won the fight by unanimous decision (50-45 x 2, 49-46) in a total display of dominance, controlling the clinch with complete ease.

The Bantamweight division saw a new champion crowned after Russian prodigy Petr Yan gave a gorgeous performance after former champ Jose Aldo, outclassing him in every way to win the vacant belt. The fourth and fifth round is where the Russian truly shined, providing Aldo with a barrage of strikes to seal the deal.

But possibly the biggest thing to come out of the Fight Island card was homegrown Aussie Alexander Volkanovski more than representing for his homeland, winning his second face-off with Max Holloway. It wasn’t all smooth sailing however, as there definitely was a period of time where it looked like the Wollongong native was going to come up short after getting dropped in the first and second rounds. But showing that classic Aussie resilience, the Wollongong native dug deep to come back hard in the third round and win the face-off in a scarily close (48-47 x 2, 47-48). Volkanovski, who now has two wins over Holloway and a win over Jose Aldo, is now 9-0 and is definitely in the conversation for best featherweight ever, and we definitely can’t wait to see what he does next.
