Illusion of Control feels like a weirdly meditative film…

Which is strange because if it had the same musical choices as Former’s recent team vid DEFECT to match the visuals – massive waves and plenty of closeouts in Fiji – it would feel much heavier. But Dave Fox, being the wizard that he is, allows the story of the island country and how surfers interact with it to be told through the lens of locals like Che Slatter. Hate to use the cliché, but it does feel a little like a love letter to the Fijian archipelago, and particularly Cloudbreak.

But fuck. There’s no shortage of great surfing of course, with James Kusitino and Craig Anderson applying their unique styles, but similarly playful approaches, to waves that would make most of us too scared to leave the boat…

Craig sums up the ability of Fiji’s first pro surfer nicely. “James’s raw talent and unique approach in waves of consequence are like nothing I’ve seen before. In the water, he’s completely in his own world. To me, he is the most gifted 17-year-old surfer on the planet,” he says.
