In his latest stroke of feud-related controversy, undefeated boxing legend Floyd Mayweather has ruffled former rival Manny Pacquiao’s feathers recently, labelling the veteran welterweight champ an “old man”.
It didn’t stop there, with Money Mayweather criticising the younger fighters who were currently chasing a face-off with Pacquiao, especially after he beat the previously-undefeated Florida titan Keith Thurman to claim the WBA super welterweight title last July.
“I don’t have anything against him, but it’s not me. It’s sad that you hear guys say, ‘I want to fight Manny Pacquiao.’ But Manny Pacquiao is 41 now. Don’t chase him. You young guys chase each other. Stop chasing this old man. If the opportunity presents itself, go out and do what you got to do”, Mayweather told Fight Hype.
“Let Manny Pacquiao pick and choose who he wants to fight. With everything he’s accomplished, hopefully, he’s made some smart investments.”
Ouch, that’s a shot if I’ve ever heard one. With Manny being the current champ though (and a legend in his own right), it kind of makes sense for the younger fighters on the roster to want to take him on, to win the belt as well as make a name for themselves by taking out one of the greats.
Pacquiao wasn’t too phased by Mayweather’s digs however, stating to The Manila Times “He is just envious because he’s already retired. We’re still active and have a crown. I’m not thinking about that yet. I’m concerned first and foremost about our countrymen. No retirement yet. I’m still training, God is good.”
With Floyd though, it’s never certain if he’ll remain in retirement, teasing UFC bouts with the Notorious MMA Conor McGregor as well as a possible boxing match with Dagestan juggernaut Khabib Nurmagomedov. Let’s hope he adds a possible rematch with Pacquiao so they can work out their ever-present problems in the ring…
