Following his return to the boxing world after facing off against Roy Jones Jr. last year, Mike Tyson seems to be properly invested in continuing on with his fighting career, but his latest announcement is definitely one that even longtime fans will be a bit stunned about.
To break it down, Tyson was rumoured to be taking part in a fight against Evander Holyfield in the upcoming months. Now however, it seems plans have changed, with Holyfield facing off against Kevin McBride in a six-round exhibition match on June 5th, while Tyson is now facing Lennox Lewis in September.
Announcing to TMZ earlier this week, Tyson declared “I’m gonna fight Lennox Lewis, September.” Lewis hasn’t since commented on the news.
If this actually happens though, it’ll be big to say the least, with the pair having a pretty intense rivalry until they finally fought in June 2002. The night saw Lewis dismantle a fading Tyson, kicking him out in the eighth round to retain the IBF and WBC heavyweight titles. The fight also was one of the biggest pay-per-views of all time (selling 1.95 million buys), which was huge for 2002.
The careers of both fighters would come to an end soon after, with Lewis retiring in 2003 after his fight with Vitaly Klitschko and Tyson walking away in 2005 after being defeated by the likes of Danny Williams and McBride, that is of course until he returned last year against Roy Jones Junior.
No doubt the boxing world is keen to say the least. Check out highlights from Lewis’ and Tyson’s first fight in 2002 below.
