Fullback Kalyn Ponga has been offered a four year deal at $4.5 million by the Newcastle Knights, which includes an escape clause enabling the WA born superstar to play for the All Blacks at the 2023 Rugby World Cup.
The Sydney Morning Herald reported on Tuesday that the offer includes a final year option in Ponga’s favour should he decide to try rugby union at the RWC in France.
“He could play for the All Blacks, the Wallabies, or he may end up going to Japan or Europe. We genuinely want the best for the young man and whenever he wants to play rugby league, we want him to play here at Newcastle in an environment he enjoys” Newcastle chief executive Philip Gardner said.
“We’ve offered him an upgraded contract for 2020-21 on the basis of an extension. “The family know how much we want to keep him at Newcastle and they will come back to us with their view”.
With Ponga being a free agent on the 1st of November, it seems the worlds his oyster when it comes to possible teams. But personally, with the Knights being a real LWA favourite, this deal is music to our ears.
It’s fair to say we’re hoping he gets to rock the blue and red for a little while longer…
