When I was a kid, we used to raid building sites for plywood and make kickers with bricks, then skate them in shoes held together by electrical tape, on hand-me-down boards that usually had at least one completely worn down kick. Why? Well, mostly because it was all our parents would buy us, but also because that’s kind of what skaters do – they adapt whatever they have in order to achieve the best experience, which is how the humble Half Cab was born.
You see, in 1989 skateboarding legend Steve Caballero and Vans introduced the world to his first signature shoe, the Caballero. Over the next few years, skaters DIY customised the kick, cutting down the high-top padding for more flexibility and sealing it with tape, accidentally birthing one of skateboarding’s most iconic shoes, the Half Cab.
Celebrating the gutter ingenuity of those skaters, Vans are now dropping the Skate Half Cab ‘92, a shoe that pays homage to the silhouette, while also offering the modern trimmings that have been developed in the years since. Those elevated features include pigskin upper, the Vans Duracap, heavier knurl texture on toe bumpers, as well as SickStick, a new proprietary gum rubber compound and loads more.
