Definitely one of the wildest Australian Opens in recent memory…

After what’s been a rollercoaster of a couple weeks in Melbourne for the Australian Open, Novak Djokovic, the man who has been at the centre of a bunch of the drama and ridiculousness, has finally spoken out.

Sitting down with match commentators following his final round win over Danlil Medvedev, Djokovic addressed everything from that controversial open letter he wrote as well as his third-round injury which drew large speculation as to its severity, especially considering he went on to win the tournament.

“I wanted to keep things quiet and clear for me in terms of talking about the injury or any other stuff. Just keeping it to tennis,” he said.

“I mean, it’s a muscle tear. It was a muscle tear at that point. I don’t think I’ve experienced that kind of a snap that I have in the third round. I went to the MRI. MRI has shown a tear. People questioned that. I understand why they question my injury. Question whether there is a tear. There is. I mean I can get the doctors and physios to confirm that.”

He also opened up on all the controversy that defined his Australian Open experience saying “Emotionally (this) was one of hardest tournaments I had.

“To be honest with quarantine and a lot of things happening in the media. The letter that I wrote, ideas and recommendations that I got from players was misinterpreted as my request and list of demands. Then the next thing you know within a couple of days I’m the persona non grata in this country.

“I got injured in the third round. It was rollercoaster ride, if I can define it in one word. I think it makes it even sweeter for me. I’ll take a lot of positives from this tournament without a doubt.”

Regardless of what you think of him, old mate proved once again that he’s the GOAT, overcoming his injuries and all the noise to defeat Medvedev 7-5, 6-2, 6-2, garnering his ninth Grand Slam title in the country. Here’s hoping his next Australian Open experience (and the next Australian Open as a whole) is nowhere near as tumultuous. For now, check out his post match interview below.
