Canadian tennis prodigy Denis Shapovalov has had a shaky start to the first round of The Australian Open, getting into it with an umpire over a bathroom break. Facing off against Italian rising star Jannik Sinner, Shapovalov naturally needed to, well, go, but the umpire wasn’t having it.
“What happens if I go?”, he asked. “Do I get a fine? I don’t care!”
The umpire then declined again, which forced Shapovalov to bring out the big guns, the Canadian prodigy saying “I’m going to p*** my pants! I’m going to p*** in a bottle! You guys are not allowing players to p***? I don’t understand this rule!”
Honestly, fair enough on Shapovalov’s part, if you gotta go, you gotta go. And this whole limited bathroom break rule has divided the tennis world for ages, with players encouraged to only go during set breaks. Luckily, old mate managed to hold it together, coming out on top in a five-set smash in 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.
Following the win Shapovalov was way more chill, but still took aim at the rule, explaining “I was just blowing off steam, just kind of cooling my head, getting rid of it,” he said.
“But also, I do think it’s a dumb rule. Especially for me, I’ve got the smallest bladder ever, so I literally got to take a p*** every set. So it’s difficult, especially when you’re on that court for so long. Before the match I’m trying to hydrate as much as possible, so yeah, I gotta pee, man.”
I’ve said it twenty times during this article and I’ll say it again, if you gotta go, you gotta go. Check out full video of the encounter below.
