We saw ScHoolBoy Q back in June, and wow – what a show. Although ‘Man Of The Year’ will probably get his biggest reaction, we can’t go past the sing-a-long hook of ‘Break The Bank’ and ScHoolBoy’s brash nasal delivery. This single is one of the reasons his album Oxymoron is still a serious contender for rap release of the year.

While most still have Flume’s groundbreaking self-titled debut on high rotation, 2014 has seen him seriously step up his remix game. We loved his 10-minute epic rework of The Arcade Fire, but it’s this remix of Lorde’s breakthough single ‘Tennis Court’ that stopped the Internet. This trans-Tasman collaboration will definitely set the dancefloor off at Flume’s only Australian shows this year.

British electronic star Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs recently hooked up with our own Anna Lunoe for ‘Feels Like’ – a spacey house tune that kicks up the tempo with plenty of pulsating percussion and bass. Anna Lunoe has been killing it overseas for some time now – but if TEED decides to drop this belter, we’ll still shed a tear of hometown pride.

At Splendour In The Grass, local legend Tkay Maidza proved that despite her tender age, she can definitely keep up with the country’s best. Soon after, her video for ‘U-Huh’ arrived, and critics were quick to label her Australia’s next big export. Razor sharp rhymes and jumping, electro-infused production make this a perfect festival anthem.

R&B star Jeremih has linked with woozy bass producer Shlohmo on numerous occasions, with the two even releasing a collaborative EP together – but this revamped version of ‘Fuck You All The Time’ still stands as one of their highlights. It’s sultry, dark and will be appropriate for lots of slow motion twerking. The video for the track just dropped today, and as expected, it’s an XXX affair.

When the lineup for Listen Out dropped, momentum for Zhu’s definitive single ‘Faded’ was still building, and now we recognise it as one of 2014’s biggest dance anthems. The track’s gorgeous vocal has been stuck in our head for months, and expect it to echo throughout the whole venue when this drops. This is sexy house music that evokes images of Parisian clubbing and frequent intoxication.

ASAP Ferg’s ‘Work (Remix)’ hosted the likes of French Monatana & ASAP Rocky, but the highlight verse belongs to ScHoolBoy Q. This track was one of the most brutal bangers of 2013, collecting stars from the West Coast, East Coast and Dirty South for an all-out assault over icy production. ScHoolBoy Q shines towards the track’s conclusion.

Two of the biggest stars from Australia’s indie electronic scene are headlining Listen Out – and the good news is that they’ve got a bunch of material together. ‘Drop The Game’ was our first taste of the blockbuster collaboration, and draws from both parties equally – Flume’s lush production lays the backdrop for Chet Faker’s weathered crooning.

Perth bro Ta-Ku definitely had us crying alone in our basement with his Songs To Break Up To EP, and while his take on Disclosure’s ‘Help me Lose My Mind’ doesn’t quite reach those same Drake-esque levels of tears, it’s still an intricate, emotive slice of production. Along with his impeccable hairstyles and collection of Nike Flyknits, Ta-Ku has got it all on lock.

We were very impressed by the colossal crowd that gathered for Golden Features’ set at Splendour In The Grass – the mysterious producer has definitely been able to drum up plenty of hype around his music and persona throughout 2014. Here, he takes on influential dance legends The Presets in a meeting of old and new. We like it!
