No need to look overseas to quench your musical thirst – there’s so much good music coming out of Australia at the moment it can be hard to keep track of it all. We thought we’d give you a hand by selecting some tunes worthy of your summer playlist.
Climb aboard the spaceship, strap yourself in and let the Porn Crumpets take you awaaaaay – The Perth psych-rockers have been garnering a lot of attention lately with their fuzz-laden, 70’s inspired brand of weirdness, and the Dungen-flavoured ‘Little Moon’ delivers a nice balance of soaring melodies and headbangability. Is that a thing? It is now. These guys are coming to a town near you on their ‘(B-Sides)’ national tour, and are a must see this month.
Sydney based Jermango Dreaming have got your back if you’re feeling like a Sunday serenade, combining a sexy mix of Mac DeMarco-esque guitars, rolling grooves and thick crooning. If you get the chance to catch them live, don’t forget to bring your dancing shoes as shaking it at their shows is compulsory. Pour yourself an icy cocktail with a tiny umbrella in it, unbutton that Hawaiian shirt and play this tune. Check their upcoming gigs here.
You’ve probs already heard plenty of Good Boy on Triple J, having caught our ears with 2016’s hit ‘Poverty Line.’ Now they’re back with a fresh Shirk Life EP and it’s full of all the angst we’ve come to expect from the Brisbane three-piece. No prizes for guessing what the politically charged ‘A Waste of Approximately 122 Million Dollars (Taxpayer Funded)’ is about, as the guys keenly point out that our government wasted enough money to buy an island on a survey. Catch them on tour this December, with details right here.
Very little is know about three piece Day Spa. They dropped ‘Swoop’ a little while back, and we’ve been waiting for more ever since. The tune is a little Deep Forest, a little Bjork and makes you feel like you’re running naked through the Amazon. If you get a little carried away when listening to music, maybe don’t put this one on at work.
How heavy can you get as a two-piece? Particles is the answer. Take some blues, add some doom and throw in octopus-like drumming and you have ‘Rift’, the latest offering from the band that keeps giving. Recorded live, you can really feel the huge energy and dynamics these guys have on stage, so get yourself to one of these shows.
