It’s been a big couple of years for Byron Bay’s Seaside. Since releasing their sophomore EP, Lover, We All Have Our Vices, last year the four-piece have received regular triple j airplay, played a bunch of festivals, including Splendour In The Grass, and chalked up a few laps of the East Coast playing shows.
Today’s single ‘Joyride’ is a shining example of why Seaside’s appeal is rapidly widening. Here, singer Darcy Dexter offers a vocal performance that is at times reminiscent of Kim Gordon’s brooding delivery, but also retains a pop sensibility. Backed by dueling Interpol-esque guitars and some deceptively high-energy snare work from drummer Chris Mellross, the band exhibits their ability to frankenstein genres with extreme craft. It’s familiar, but uniquely their sound.
Lyrically, the tune is something of a revenge number. Not in an overly vindictive way, but more in the sense of rising from the ashes of a shitty relationship, the I’m-over-it-and-doing-fine way. “[The song is about] “anyone who puts you down, and the strength it takes to leave a toxic situation,” Darcy says.
