Wonder how long this will last for…

In a move that is sending shockwaves through the MMA community, Conor McGregor has announced that he is retiring from the UFC, taking to Twitter to announce the huge news.

“Hey guys I’ve decided to retire from fighting,” Conor tweeted. “Thank you all for the amazing memories! What a ride it’s been! Here is a picture of myself and my mother in Las Vegas post one of my world title wins! Pick the home of your dreams Mags I love you! Whatever you desire it’s yours.”

We’re still gonna take this with a grain of salt however, as this is the third time he’s decided to retire in the past four years, announcing his retirement in 2016 and 2019 but subsequently returning after being offered massive fights and paydays.

McGregor does seem a bit over the sport in general however, saying to ESPN on Sunday “The game just does not excite me, and that’s that,” he said. “All this waiting around. There’s nothing happening. I’m going through opponent options, and there’s nothing really there at the minute. There’s nothing that’s exciting me. I’m a bit bored of the game,” he continued. “I’m here watching the fight. I watched the last show — the Woodley-Burns show — I watched the show tonight. I’m just not excited about the game… I don’t know if it’s no crowd. I don’t know what it is. There’s just no buzz for me.”

This is definitely understandable, with Conor having done almost everything there is to do in the UFC, from being the first Irish UFC Champ, winning the Featherweight and Lightweight championships, being the first Multi-Divisional champ in UFC history, and honestly, the list goes on. But with Khabib Nurmagomedov having absolutely dominated Conor way back in 2018, you’d think Conor wouldn’t feel comfortable retiring until he’d manage to reclaim some glory from the Russian superstar.

Regardless, if he retires now he’s going out on a high. beating Donald Cerrone at Welterweight with ease at the start of this year. Let’s hope Dana White offers him a big enough pay check, or somehow Floyd Mayweather decides he wants to face Conor in the Octagon, so we see the Irish superstar do what he does best one more time.
