We all have a pretty simplistic view of what it is to be an Olympic athlete – train hard for a couple of years, head to the Olympics, party a bunch and win all the gold & glory. But it’s way more complicated than that, with most of us failing to remember that those athletes are just regular human beings, and that the thrill of competition can also have some devastating lows. Luckily, HBO’s The Weight Of Gold is set to give us a deeper glimpse into the struggle, with athletes like Michael Phelps, Shaun White, Lolo Jones & many others getting real about what it’s like to win the gold, and what comes after. The trailer sees those very athletes open up on managing life after winning the top prize, with many competitors often spiralling into depression as they struggle to set their sights on new aims after winning the gold.
The athletes in the trailer are joining together to help warn the up & coming athletes who are currently working day & night to win those gold medals, much like they were, with the hope of eliminating the stigma around mental health while giving young athletes access to resources that they themselves never had.
It’s definitely a sobering, but important watch. You can catch The Weight Of Gold on HBO on July 29. Check the full trailer below.
