Don your cowls and chuck on those capes: The trailer for Matt Reeves’ The Batman has finally dropped; and it’s seriously beautiful. Going down during a DC Fandome panel over the weekend, Reeves got into the nitty gritty of what we can expect to see from the new iteration of the caped crusader, before of course dropping the trailer.
Speaking on the new direction for the crime-fighting bat, Reeves said “As we said, it’s not an origin tale and you’re meeting him in the early days… a lot of the other stories are very much about how he had to master his fear and master himself. I think for me, what was exciting, is not doing that, not doing the origin, but instead, to meet him in the middle of this crimonological experiment, to see him fail and grow and be heroic but in a way that felt very human, very flawed… the audience of putting the audience in the shoes.”
The description works perfectly for the trailer, showcasing a very detective-noir vibe that throws it back to the days of Taxi Driver and Chinatown. It also gives us a first proper look at Pattinson as Batman, and it’s fair to say Reeves truly outdid himself on this casting. He just captures that haunted-nature that you need for a good Bruce Wayne as well as the straight up brutality necessary for a terrifying Batman. There’s literally a scene where Batman beats up a dude (standard enough) but then goes to work on him on the ground and unloads fiery hell upon him, showing that this is a Batman that will get the job done no matter what, by any means necessary.
The trailer also gives us a glimpse Zoe Kravitz as Selina Kyle/ Batman, as well as Paul Dano as the Riddler and Collin Farrell as the Penguin. It looks properly promising, and according to Reeves the film is only “25% done”, so no doubt that when this is finished its gonna blow all our expectations and then some. Check the trailer below.
