Definitely on par with the game…

We’ve finally gotten the first proper trailer for the new Mortal Kombat reboot, and it’s safe to say it’s living up to all of our expectations and then some. So much so that Warner Bros. had to actually release two trailers. Essentially, the official trailer is the watered down, more marketable teaser. Whereas the red-band version, well, let’s not kid ourselves, that fucker is the real trailer without a doubt.

The trailers follow MMA fighter Cole Young (played by Lewis Tan), who bares a dragon-shaped scar on his chest (some badass foreshadowing). Cole is then recurred to fight in the legendary Mortal Kombat tournament, in which he’s fighting for the whole planet against the enemies of the Outworld. Along the way in the competition he encounters beloved Mortal Kombat game warriors like Sub-Zero and Scorpion, who look absolutely killer in their live-action get ups.

The official trailer is naturally a lot shorter, standing at a mere minute long as it features some glorious landscapes, special effects and fight scenes. Sub Zero’s voice is absolutely haunting as well, inducing some bloody-gorgeous goosebumps (the type we’ve been waiting for).

Now the red-band trailer. Oh boy. Right away we see Sub Zero literally freeze a man’s arms to death, upon which he violently breaks them off (not the only time he cuts a man’s arms off in the trailer). Along with the extra gore, the trailer gives way more context as to the tournament and the characters, as well as some killer fight snippets that are straight up classic Mortal Kombat. There’s also a hilarious moment of an unnamed character with a killer Aussie accent who says “You fucking beauty,” before the trailer cuts off. Why this was only included in the red-band trailer we’re not sure, but we’re loving the idea that an Aussie accent was too intense for international markets.

Pretty sick. The new film is set to drop in theatres and HBO Max on April 16. Check out the two trailers below.
