Once again, we’re taking the umming and ahhing out of your Wednesday.

Can’t decide what you’re doing with your night? Can’t decide what you’re doing with your life? Well we can help you with one of those and extinguish that horrible feeling of scrolling through whatever streaming service you’re using until your eyes drop out. We’ve made an executive decision: tonight you’re watching Quentin Tarantino’s 2009 film Inglourious Basterds. Here are five reasons why you oughta watch it, in case you or your partner/housemates/parents/dog need some more convincing. *Spoilers ahead*

Two of the tensest scenes in cinema history.

I’m not going to pretend I’ve seen every film, but the opening scene with Landa and Monsieur LaPadite definitely had me wanting to throw up from the tension. And, just when I’d gotten over it, the bar scene with the Basterds and Bridget von Hammersmark once again dialled-up the anxiety to level 11. So, if you’re into feeling like you want to throw your TV out the window from stress, look no further.

A fitting ending for Hitler.

For many people, Hitler’s suicide was nowhere near a fitting punishment for his terrible crimes against humanity. Seeing him get shot to bits with sadistic indifference, while a theatre full of Nazis burns around him is pure joy to the point of it being funny. It’s ok to cheer at the TV during this scene.

Landa VS Raine

The Jew Hunter VS the Apache… The release felt from their coming together in the final quarter of the film is like watching the end of a boxing movie where the two heavyweights finally go blow for blow. Christoph Waltz and Brad Pitt deliver the best performances of their careers IMO (sorry but I reckon Pitt’s Oscar-winning work Once Upon A Time In Hollywood doesn’t compare), with each of them revelling in the cartoonish nature of their characters.

The lols.

Ahhh the lols. Despite being a film that tells the story of a guerilla force attempting to bring down a tyrannous, warmongering mass-murderer, the film has no shortage of funny moments. The Basterds attempts at speaking Italian, probably takes the cake though, right?

It’s Tarantino’s biggest achievement.

Before you start coming at me with Pulp Fiction this or Reservoir that, just think about how everything works in this film. The plot, casting and pacing are perfect, with so many different storylines – the Basterds, the Shoshanna/Frederick “love” story, Fassbender and Operation Kino, and the final sequences at the cinema – it’s incredibly intricate. Tarantino thinks so too, with the final line “I think this just might be my masterpiece” as Pitt stares down the camera a clear meta nod to himself.
