Continuing to take on dynamic roles that show he’s far more than that dude who played Spiderman a little while back (although he may be playing the wall-crawler soon if our suspicions are correct), British sensation Andrew Garfield has upped the ante for his latest role, playing a Jake/Logan Paul-like vlogger in his new film Mainstream. The film follow’s Garfield’s character Link as he attempts to slide into the TV world off the back of his huge internet following, pretty much lying to everyone along the way. He even goes so far as to lead on Maya Hawke’s character Frankie in his quest for fame while she slowly falls in love with him (whoever would lead Maya Hawke on in any way deserves a one way ticket to hell).
In some rare fourth-wall breaking as well, Jake Paul himself (AKA one of the worst people alive) appears in the trailer, essentially, well, being himself. But aside from the cameo, the film has some glorious retro party scenes while showing ogf the US brand of media and exuberance in the perfect amount of ridiculousness.
An official synopsis for the new flick reads “A young woman (Maya Hawke) thinks she’s found a path to internet stardom when she starts making YouTube videos with a charismatic stranger (Andrew Garfield) – until the dark side of viral celebrity threatens to ruin them both. Starring Maya Hawke, Andrew Garfield, Kalena Yiaueki, Nat Wolff, Johnny Knoxville, and Jason Schwartzman.”
Sounds pretty solid and exactly on par with our insane internet culture in 2021. Check the full trailer below.
