Dave Chappelle’s new podcast Midnight Miracle has finally landed, and the comedian has well and truly hit the ground running. Releasing the first two episodes on podcast platform Luminary with co-hosts Talib Kweli and Yasiin Bey, the Chappelle’s Show creator seems to be taking an experimental approach with the series, with everything from subject matter to guests and release schedule seeming different to the norm.
“Making a podcast isn’t the obvious next move for me, but it’s the right one,” Chappelle said when announcing the new venture. “The Midnight Miracle gives you a look into how me and my friends process the world around us, and I think it will change the way listeners think of what a podcast can be.”
Luckily, the first episode (titled “How To Inspire”) is available on YouTube for free, and gives fans a taste of what the new series will be like (no doubt to encourage people to sign up to Luminary).
“How do you make somebody want to live?” Chappelle asks at the start of the episode. “Like, how do you make somebody want to live? Seriously, if someone you love was actively, slowly killing themselves, what are you gonna do?”
The question set a pretty interesting springboard to launch off of, with the hosts breaking down the topic in between clips of the late Amy Winehouse.
A hilarious moment of the first instalment also included Bey reflecting on a show with Chappelle, specifically where he unknowingly consumed several edibles before Robin Williams took to the stage for a surprise set (can imagine nothing more overwhelming).
The first episode features a pretty crazy lineup of acts, with appearances from Radio Rahim, Mo Amer, Chris Rock, Donnell Rawlings, Jarobi White, and Questlove. The second episode (titled “Gladiator Circus World”) keeps the hype going, with Questlove and Radio Rahim returning along with first timers Lamorne Morris, and Jon Hamm joining the show.
