After making waves behind the scenes for years on end, Sydney’s Soma Sutton is finally stepping out into the limelight…

And she’s using her latest single ‘Trust’ (out tomorrow) to do it, the neo-soul bop Sutton’s first offering in two years. Luckily for you, we happen to be premiering it today, the songstress’ silky new offering now available for your listening pleasure a full day before it hits major streaming services (what are you waiting for?).

Echoing the sonic whispers of soul-pioneers like Erykah Badu and Etta James, the new offering sees the bluesy enchantress double down on sentiments of self-love and transformation, the sensual slow-burn inspired by growth following the dissolution of a toxic relationship. Naturally, the ensuing sonics (produced by Korky Buchek) and vocals are flush with invigoration, her neo-soul vocals riding the pastel synths as she attacks lyrics like “I put in the trust but/you can’t seem to admit it.”

It all comes to a head on the last chorus of the tune around 2:40, the starlet’s harmonies helping to maximise the anticipation of the hook, all of which collide with a sense of urgency at 2:55. The emotion is especially tangible in this section, and with the underlying synths and bass maximising in resonance, well, it’s enough to move you into the next realm.

Speaking on the story behind the euphoric new tune, the starlet explains “The story behind ‘Trust’ is about the shedding of old skins, power regained and knowledge acquired about yourself after a toxic relationship.

“The enlightening realisations and self-growth that comes from heartbreak and how important it is to understand that happiness & validation come from within.”
