When Hugh Jackman promised fans that 2017’s Logan would be his last time playing Wolverine, it seemed his decision to hang up his claws was set in stone. It was the perfect movie to conclude on, and considering the ending his character received at the end of it (Spoiler alert: he dies), it seemed next to impossible that he’d ever return to the Marvel ionosphere.
But five years on, Jackman has confirmed that he will indeed reprise the role, appearing in a teaser for Deadpool 3 with Ryan Reynolds. Posted with the caption “Hard keeping my mouth sewn shut about this one”, in reference to 2013’s The Wolverine, the clip sees Reynolds give an update on the upcoming film and what’s set to be his first appearance in the MCU. In line with his past promo for the franchise, Reynolds amps up the comedy levels as he treats us to a montage of him brainstorming ways to find “new depth, motivation, meaning” for the meta-theatrical anti-hero, before he confesses that “And I…I have nothing. Yeah, just completely empty up here. And terrifying.”
It’s at this point of the video that Jackman makes his appearance, with Reynolds adding that “we did have one idea” as the Prestige actor walks into frame behind him. Then, as if speaking for the collective Marvel fandom, Reynolds calls out, asking, “Hey, Hugh, you want to play Wolverine one more time?” to which Jackman casually replies, “Yeah, sure, Ryan”. Whitney Houston’s ‘I Will Always Love You’ subsequently blurts into being and the screen fades to black, before the Deadpool logo is slashed with Wolverine’s blades.
