So, it looks like Quentin Tarantino is finally hanging up his director’s hat and calling it a day. After a long and illustrious career that brought us some of the most iconic movies of our time, including Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill, and Inglorious Basterds, he’s announced that his final film will be called The Movie Critic. Now, don’t go getting too excited, as there’s no official release date yet, and the movie is still in the pre-production phase with Tarantino still shopping it to all of the major studios, which means it’ll probably take far longer to make than it does for most of us to eat a Royale with cheese.
Reports appear to suggest that that The Movie Critic will be set in 1970s Los Angeles and will revolve around a strong female lead. Theorists and Tarantino obsessives alike have speculated that the film might involve the legendary movie critic Pauline Kael, who the veteran director has long admired. But who knows? Maybe it’ll just be a movie about a critic who spends two hours bashing everything Tarantino ever made (just imagine the dialogue Tarantino would come up with for that beauty).
One thing we do know, however, is that The Movie Critic is supposed to be an epilogue of sorts to Tarantino’s entire filmography. You know, like the final season of a TV show that wraps up all the loose ends and gives you closure on all the characters you’ve grown to love instead of butchering them all into oblivion? (shoutout to the eternal dumpster fire that is the final season of Game of Thrones). And to top it off, there are even reports that Tarantino might shoot the whole thing in black and white, which would be a major departure from his usual style. I mean, what’s next, a musical number? (cut to a maniacal Samuel L. Jackson singing show tunes).
All joking aside, it’s a bit sad to see Tarantino call it quits. But it’s clear that Tarantino has been more than ready to move onto the next phase of his career for several years now, with the Kill Bill director stating in 2019, “I think when it comes to theatrical movies, I’ve come to the end of the road. I see myself writing books and starting to write theatre, so I’ll still be creative. I just think I’ve given all I have to give to movies.”
Still, he’s revolutionised cinema and given us all countless memories over the years. But hey, let’s not get too down. The Movie Critic is still coming, and who knows what kind of crazy stuff Tarantino has in store for us this time. So, let’s sit back, relax, and wait for the final train boxcar to roll into the station. It’s been one hell of a ride.
